The prognosis (the probability of recovery) depends on many elements including:

• the stage at which the cancer has been diagnosed
• the type of breast cancer
• the quantity of estrogen and progesterone receptors in the breast tumor 
• the levels of human epidermal growth factor type 2 receptors (HER2/neu)
• the progression of the disease
• the patients age and general health  
• whether the patient is still having menstrual periods or is menopaused 
• whether the cancer has been diagnosed for the first time or has recurred (came back).
