Types of lung cancer
There are two major types of lung cancer. Each type behaves differently and is thus treated differently:
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer, accounting for about 70% of all cases. It is usually a slow evolving disease that does not spreads rapidly. There are three major types of NSCLC: adenocarcinoma, large cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a less common (around 20% of lung cancers) and more aggressive type of lung cancer which spreads faster than NSCLC. There are three major types of small cell lung cancer: small cell carcinoma, mixed small cell/large cell and combined small cell carcinoma.
