Operating Grants
The Cancer Research Society (CRS) operating grant is the principal means by which the Cancer Research Society supports research activities by independent scientists or small groups of investigators. The operating grant competition falls within our regular competitions and takes place every year.
Yearly Calendar:

The amount of accepted new projects each year varies depending on available funds. The average over the past 5 years has been 41 new projects yearly. Although a minimum scientific score of 7.5 out of 10 is required to obtain funding, in recent years only projects obtaining the financial cut-off were funded.
2012 CRS Operating Grant Competition
The competition is currently closed. The deadline for submission of an application was February 16, 2012.
We are however accepting publication updates for already submitted applications until May 15, 2012. All updates must be delivered to our offices (625 President-Kennedy Avenue, Suite 402, Montreal, H3A 3S5) on this day by 5 p.m. EST and must include a copy of the original letter of acceptance for publication from the editor.
Competition results will be announced in August 2012.
Specific Operating Grants
Over the last years, the CRS is proud to offer additional operating grants to the scientific community through its regular competition. These grants on specific types of cancer are added to the regular operating grants that may apply to the broad field of cancer. The funding of these specific grants is made possible thanks to important partnership that the CRS did develop over the last years with invaluable partners.
This year, for its regular operating grant competition 2012, the CRS is offering additional grants in the following specific fields:
- Environment-Cancer:
Up to four (4) grants in this field could be supported through the CRS’ Environment-Cancer FundTM.
- Prostate Cancer:
This year, thanks to its partnership with PROCURE, the CRS could attribute a first specific grant in the field of prostate cancer.
- Neuroendocrine Tumours:
Moreover, through a partnership with the Carcinoid NeuroEndocrine Tumour Society Canada (CNETS), the CRS will be co-funding one (1) operating grant on carcinoid neuroendocrine tumours.
Program Specifics:
Upon acceptance of an award, different actions need to be taken by a researcher in order for his/her award to take effect:
- Formally accepting the award and its pertaining rules while stating that no overlap of the project exists;
- Advising the financial officer of his/her institution of the award;
- Completing and sending his/her researcher’s profile (download available to the right of this page), including a recent picture, for our website and donor relations.

A yearly financial report for all CRS funding must be submitted to the Cancer Research Society by November 30. Please advise your financial officer and visit the “Are you a grant administrator?” section to download the appropriate form.
CRS Progress report
For all terminating projects, a final progress report is required from the researcher in order to follow the status of the research project. This report is due by November 30 following the end of the project. Progress reports are also required for renewals.
Researcher Profile & Questionnaire
Individual profile pages on our website are created for each of our funded researchers. This researcher profile document should be filled out and returned to the CRS following acceptance of an award.
