The 2nd annual Snyder’s Ponsard Hockey Game was held on October 16th, 2010 at the LLC arena. To this day, the event has raised over $25,000 for the Cancer Research Society. Many former players and their sons played last year, in memory of Gerry Snyder. The game was unforgettable and the next game will be an opportunity for families and friends to attend once again. A list of players will be announced in the weeks leading up to the game, so make sure to reserve your spot today! Even if you don't play hockey, you can attend for free, so bring your children and your friends!
For more information about this event and/or to sign up, please contact Glenn Snyder: 450 826-0411.
Comments from the 2010 Ponsard hockey game participants:
Skippy Kerner, Montreal
"Getting involved in this event is a great way to make a charitable contribution. What really got me involved in the reunion is not only that it is a way to reminisce over our childhood but also to get involved with a charity."
Mike Hirsch, Montreal
"Gerry Snyder was my coach in the hockey league; he was a very big influence in my life."
Mike Hirsch wrote a poem on his experience in the Ponsard Hockey league. Please click on the right to download his poem.
Mike Flinker, Montreal
"I literally grew up in the league. I have very fond memories of it being very well-run and allowing us kids to have a lot of fun. My son Jordan will participate in this year's event."
David Stein, Toronto
"As a child, it was great to be involved in the league. There was a feeling of collegiality and team spirit among us. I learned a lot from the experience. Last year, at the reunion, I brought my friend Dan Neely who ended up winning the trophy."
Murray Steinberg, Montreal
"I wanted to renew friendships from my youth and recapture some of my fond experiences. Gerry was close to our family beginning in 1948. Our paths crossed many times. For instance, when Gerry played for Steinberg's in the Snowdown Major Fastball League, I was the batboy. During the 50's, I played and also coached in Gerry's Ponsard Hockey League. I even worked in his sport shop for a while. It was there that I learned to drive 'gear shift' on his pickup truck. This time of my life has left me with wonderful and fond memories."
Nathan Boidman, Montreal
"This provides me with an opportunity, in the context of having played on Gerry Snyder's very first Ponsard teams, to honour the memory of a dedicated leader in our community, support his interest in and support of the Cancer Research Society, to express to Glenn Snyder my appreciation for his tireless efforts in making this all happen and to indulge my passion to play hockey."
* Gerry Snyder also starred in the Snowdon Major Fastball League, and became a leader in the English community. From his initiatives, his foresight, and his ability to implement his plans for the good of all, he gained recognition. He began his political career in 1957, representing Snowdon in Mayor Jean Drapeau's Civic Party, lasting 25 years. Eventually selected to Montreal's Executive Committee, he became Mayor Drapeau's close friend and confidant. Gerry Snyder and Jean Drapeau shared the inspiration to "put Montreal on the map", with EXPO67, the Metro, the Expos, and the 1976 Olympics. Team photos from the old Ponsard Park Hockey League were found recently, those from Snyder's Sport's Shop.
