Choquequirao is an Inca city in ruins, in the South of Peru. Although it presents some similarities in structure and architecture to the Machu Picchu, it is much less frequented by tourists, which gives it a great advantage. Located at an altitude of 3,085 meters in the chain of Salkantay, in the province of La Convención, Choquequirao overlooks the valley of river Río Apurímac. The ruins are constituted of buildings and terraces at different levels above and below Sunch'u Pata and the truncated hill top. The complex covers 1,800 hectares, of which only 30-40% have been excavated to date. Even today, there is still no carriage way to reach the site of Choquequirao.
