The Mera Project participants are back in Canada after their great adventure!

Climbing Mera involved twenty-five days of intense, non-stop trekking, including a week dedicated to reaching base camp. This March 2012 expedition had participants crossing rice paddies and bamboo and rhododendron forests while enjoying breathtaking views of fabled seven- and eight-thousand metre peaks with familiar names such as Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam, Baruntse and Kangchenjunga. The trek then continued through snowy passes, with a break at a camp suspended on the side of a cliff and crevasse-filled glacier, before finally reaching the summit. While not a technical climb, peaking Mera required excellent physical condition as well as incredible determination. Experience in walking with crampons and being roped up, and being able to handle extreme weather conditions as well as 45-degree slopes were must-haves in this challenging climb. All qualities that Marc and Micheline demonstrated with bravery!

Unfortunately, difficult climatic conditions did not allow the participants to reach the summit. However, despite these unfortunate circumstances, our two adventurers reached their ultimate goal: to increase awareness of the daily challenges faced by people battling cancer, be they loved ones, friends or colleagues, while illustrating how solidarity can play a major role in fighting cancer and conquering the highest summits.

They are Louis, Christian, Jeanine, Jean-René, Denis and Kees, and they all share a similar courage, determination and willingness to live and to conquer this horrid illness, regardless of the suffering and difficulties encountered in their daily lives. The odds seem stacked, but together, we can find solutions through the support of cancer research.

Thank you for accompanying this team of climbers to the summit in the name of cancer research.
