The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in Northern China, built originally to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against intrusions by various nomadic groups. Several walls have been built since the 5th century B.C. that are referred to collectively as the Great Wall, which has been rebuilt and maintained from the 5th century B.C. through to the 16th century. It is the largest architectural structure built by man both in terms of length, surface and mass. The Great Wall is a masterpiece; not only because of the ambitious nature of the undertaking and the perfection of its construction, but also because it offers a perfect example of architecture integrated into the landscape, on the vast scale of a continent. Therefore, it is not surprising that it has been, since 1987, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
