Natural killer (NK) cells are able to detect and kill many different types of cancer cells and are important components of the body’s natural defence system. Dendritic cells (DC) are also important for anti-cancer immunity, because they have the capacity to pick up antigens from cancer cells and present them to other lymphocytes. Recently, a new population of lymphocytes called NKDC has been found. These cells have the properties of both NK cells and DC, Our goal is to find ways to apply those properties of NKDCs to generate anti-cancer effects that are stronger than those generated by NK cells and DC separately. We will investigate the capacity of NKDC to kill cancer cells by the “natural killing” activity and, at the same time, to pick up antigens from killed cancer cells and present them to other lymphocytes to promote antigen-specific immunity against cancer.
