According to a recent Statistics Canada report, more than 10% of women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime and based on current mortality rates, over 30% of these patients will die of their disease, most often due to metastatic disease. Recent studies have found that certain breast cancer cells act like stem cells and that these cancer cells are more invasive and metastatic. However, very little is known about how breast cancer cells become stem cell-like. This project will examine if a stem cell associated factor called Nodal makes cancer cells like stem cells and whether it plays a role in breast cancer invasion and metastasis. The goal of this project is to determine if Nodal is a useful target for the treatment of breast cancer and if it may be used as a prognostic indicator of breast cancer metastasis.
