GRePEC

GRePEC (Research and prevention group on environment-cancer) is the Cancer Research Society’s (CRS) research program in environment-cancer, in partnership with the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS) and the Ministère du développement économique, de l'innovation et de l'exportation du Québec (MDEIE). Its goal is to develop research on the links between the environment and cancer. The environment is herein defined as the chemical and physical elements in our living and work environments, and in our lifestyles (diet, physical activity, etc.). The agreement comes with joint funding of up to $15 million over five years by the CRS and its partners.

GRePEC’s objectives are:

  1. To achieve synergy between cancer research initiatives in Quebec. To do so, research projects must be multi-institutional.
  1. To involve different disciplines (such as cellular and molecular biology, nutrition, toxicology, epidemiology, medicine, pharmacogenomics, genetics, etc.).
  1. To ensure that the projects funded will yield concrete results.

Program details:

Grants under the GRePEC program are for a term of 5 years and are non renewable. Funds can range between $350,000/year to $1,000,000/year, depending on the submitted research projects.

Only professionals or researchers who hold a PhD or a MD degree can submit a grant application under this program. There must be a clinician and an epidemiologist on each research team. The research must be carried out in Quebec.

Training the next generation of scientists

As part of the GRePEC program, the three partners wish to foster the training of a high-calibre, internationally renowned next generation of scientists. The partners also wish to secure the future funding of students and researchers who will be involved in the GRePEC program, so as to maximize the possible leverage effect of research projects. Specific steps are taken to select the best students and researchers for the GRePEC program.
